With a smaller and lighter engine under the hood, different handling dynamics are present. If you’ve just tasted GM-powered V-8 pickups, you need to get into this four-cylinder model – handling that is sharper than competitors is getting better thanks to lower weight. The truck feels smaller than a large footprint that is understood by its large dimensions, almost as if it were a slightly larger version of the Colorado Chevrolet pickup. The redness of the truck also provides numerical advantages when it comes to truck-style tasks: The 2.7-liter Silverado-equipped is rated for nearly 2,300 pounds of payload and a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds.
Now, all of these compliments come with a warning: My test drive was done with a pickup that was fully lowered only with me and a passenger. It’s not loaded into the gills with a sand bag, doesn’t pull the trailer and doesn’t have many fat construction workers filling all six seats. How the 2.7-liter engine behaves when assigned to do truck tasks is something that we will test immediately, but until then, we cannot speak to how it behaves under load or when it is pulled.
Under the hood
Look under the hood and you will realize that this is not an ordinary turbo four. At 2.7 liters, it is a large four cylinder – as much as the Eco-turbo V-6 Eco-turbocharged 2.7-liter displacement, actually. It pumps 310 impressive horsepower and 348 pounds of torque. That is 14 percent torque which is quite large compared to the standard 4.3-liter V-6 output before, and also the best of the Ford V-6’s 3.6 liter base and 3.2 liter Pentastar eTorque V-6 Ram in the latest 1500. This new engine has several features designed to maximize fuel economy, including active fuel management – cylinder deactivation for all of us – which means that under certain conditions, the motor operates in a two-cylinder mode. The shift between four and two cylinder modes was so invisible that I didn’t even realize the engine could do it until I was told that it did – a few hours after I had driven the truck. This also features the first application of Chevrolet active thermal management – a system that can send coolers to various parts of the truck’s powertrain (head, engine block, transmission) to speed up heating and optimize fuel efficiency. And although it is turbocharged, the compression ratio of 10.0: 1 means that the motor can happily run on 87 octane gasoline – unleaded regular, no need for premium as in most turbocharged engines.
Price to sell
With the LT and RST trim levels which are the most popular models in the Silverado Chevy lineup, hoping to see many of these machines appear in many showrooms throughout the country. They also operate in the sweet spot for prices, too, covering the range of $ 30,000 – $ 40,000 where Chevy says it sells most trucks. The cheapest truck with this engine is double-wheel-drive LT double cab, which starts at $ 38,395 including the cost of the destination. My test truck is such a model, but he added several popular equipment packages and left the factory with a sticker price of $ 44,900. Start checking the option box in the 4×4 RST cabin, and you can easily get $ 60,000 for a half-ton turbo four-cylinder pickup. However, there can’t be many who will come out of the door like that. If you spend that much money, you might have determined one of the optional V-8 machines.
