Old Fire Truck For Sale – The West Allis Fire Department is looking to buy back something it owned years ago. The 1930 fire trucks Peter Pirsch & Sons were used to be owned by the department – for a long time – but have been in the hands of private collectors since closing in 1972. Now the department is making a fundraising effort to buy the previous machine in hopes of using it for education, public relations and teaching students and residents about West Allis and the history of fire services.
Not a new idea
Assistant to West Allis Fire Chief Kurt Zellmann said the idea of bringing back trucks had been around for years, even before he joined the department. Zellmann, who was born and raised in Mequon, said that the truck was owned by a collector in Thiensville for a long time and was always on his radar screen.

“I was hired at the West Allis Fire Service, and I always watched it,” Zellmann said. “One time I got a few years at work that I had to know (then fire chief) Steve Bane, and I revealed that idea to him, and he said, yes, let’s discuss it later. And finally we managed to do it. ”
The truck is no longer in Thiensville; now in Kohler, owned by John Esche.
West Fire Chief Allis Mason Pooler said Esche was a “hardcore fire service collector” and had done a great job to take care of it – and keep him loyal during his time.
“He has done his research by studying old photographs and searching online, on online auction sites and antique stores, and found equipment that was exactly the same as that on the machine in the 1930s and replaced it with, as much as he could, things the exact same, “Pooler said.
Machine No. 3
Truck 1930 was one of two purchased by the fire department at that time and served as Engine No. 3, said Zellmann.
It lived in that area throughout life through a series of collectors.
“His twin at the fire museum, I believe in Ohio somewhere,” Zellmann said. “But these two are better. It has a higher value lamp and a better warning light on top, a better windshield, some things like that. ”
Pooler said it was not unusual for the fire department to have an antique rig that they owned, but usually it was not in the framework of work and only for display, or it was not actually owned by the department.
That’s what makes this opportunity special.
“You will see many departments have older rigs that they will use for similar events, but that is not always their rig, it’s just an antique rig that they can buy and then put their logo on the side,” Pooler said. “But the fact that this was bought by our city in 1930, and the fact that we can track it and have the opportunity to buy it is very unique.”
88 years later …
If sales go on, it will mark 88 years since the department originally bought a machine from Peter Pirsch & Sons based in Kenosha in 1930 for $ 10,950.
This rig served the city for 42 years, from 1930 to 1972.
The department must collect $ 16,000 to make a purchase and have a GoFundMe page set up at www.gofundme.com/help-bring-home-our-fire-engine. On December 7, $ 1,425 has been raised.
The engine will be placed, utilized and maintained by the West Allis Fire Service, said Pooler. The separate Allis Allis Fire Committee will have shared use of machines for charity events.
Regular maintenance of the rig will be borne by the city.
Pooler said the department would use ancient vehicles to promote fire prevention and public education.
For example, the department could issue it in an environmental smoke alarm installation to help build awareness.
“When old fire trucks roam the streets, I think people tend to be more interested and peek out their windows to see what’s happening,” Pooler said.
The July 4 and Christmas parade will be another opportunity to show off the rig, he said.
Another option might be school activities, with a kind of contest that focuses on fire prevention and fire education with the winning child getting a ride behind the 1930 engine.
“The fire department has a proud history, and many of our activities are rooted in tradition, and this is just a great opportunity to repurchase a piece of our past,” Pooler said.
